Knoxville (WVLT) - Check your garage and medicine cabinets, if you have any mercury thermometers, now is the time to toss them and get a safe replacement for free.
A couple of local agencies are helping you get rid of this health hazard the right way.
With the sun shining, the numbers on your thermometers are likely rising.
But the tool you're using to see just how hot it is outside, or how much of a temperature you may have, could be very hazardous to your health and the environment.
"if you look at your thermometer and if the temperature reading is made out of a silver column going up and down, that is mercury," says Rural Metro Fire Chief Jerry Harnish
No that is another liquid," says Harnish.
If that's what your thermometer looks like then it's filled with mercury, a heavy metal that occurs naturally in the environment, but can be very harmful if you touch it, ingest it, or even breath in it's vapors.
"Mercury can damage the brain, spinal cord, liver and kidneys," Chief Harnish says.
Which is why Rural Metro is making it really easy for you to replace the old with new.
With the help of the Knox County Health Department, Rural Metro is offering a pretty good exchange.
Give them your mercury filled household items, they will properly dispose of it, and give you a new digital thermometer for free.
You can trade your household items with mercury for a free digital thermometer at any Rural Metro location.
