KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A very aggressive type of mosquito is swarming cities in the United States and here in Tennessee.
The Asian Tiger mosquito is relatively new to some parts of the country, but has been in Knox County for several years.
Director of Environmental Health for the Knox County Health Department, Ronnie Nease says there are about 12 to 15 different types of mosquitoes in Knox County.
He says this one is harder to fend off and unlike common mosquitoes which come out at dusk and dawn, this one will bite you at any time of the day.
"The Asian Tiger will bite you 24 hours a day. It's very aggressive. It really likes to attack your ankles and your legs."
He says it does not carry a different disease and is tested for West Nile Virus.
It's an urban mosquito, so you'll typically see it in cities and near your home.
"It really lives around people. You won't find it out in the dead of the country, it's really out around people and containers. Especially when you're in a cool, damp area around a lot of foliage, like Ivy or trees," says Nease.
He adds it breeds in small amounts of water, so to prevent it from flying around your home, be sure to pour out water that has collected.
