KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Two weeks after 2-year-old Aiden Martin wandered from his babysitter's home, and nearly drowned in the backyard pool, his mother, Ashley Archer breaks her silence. "It's really hard, especially when you don't know what really happened," she said.
Here's what we do know: a handyman found Aiden floating face-down and began CPR. It's not his first brush with death. In December the toddler slipped away from the same babysitter, fell in the same pool, and nearly drowned.
"The first time this happened I thought it was an accident, it could happen to anybody," said Archer. When asked what she thinks happened the second time she replied, "I'd rather not give my opinion right now." That's because the near tragedy is still under investigation. Archer has spent everyday at Aiden's Children's Hospital bedside. "He's definitely a fighter. He is a fighter that's for sure."
She says her faith and family support helped her get this far. "I thank everyone for their prayers, support, and encouragement for me and especially my son." Still, two big questions remain. Will she let Aiden near a pool again? "If my son wants to get back in the water, I'm not going to take that from him."
And will she use the same babysitter again? "I will not. My family will help me take care of him."
A fund has been established at ORNL Federal Credit Union to help with Aiden's mounting medical bills.
