Baby Aiden's mom speaks only to Local 8 News

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Two weeks after 2-year-old Aiden Martin wandered from his babysitter's home, and nearly drowned in the backyard pool, his mother, Ashley Archer breaks her silence. "It's really hard, especially when you don't know what really happened," she said.

Here's what we do know: a handyman found Aiden floating face-down and began CPR. It's not his first brush with death. In December the toddler slipped away from the same babysitter, fell in the same pool, and nearly drowned.

"The first time this happened I thought it was an accident, it could happen to anybody," said Archer. When asked what she thinks happened the second time she replied, "I'd rather not give my opinion right now." That's because the near tragedy is still under investigation. Archer has spent everyday at Aiden's Children's Hospital bedside. "He's definitely a fighter. He is a fighter that's for sure."

She says her faith and family support helped her get this far. "I thank everyone for their prayers, support, and encouragement for me and especially my son." Still, two big questions remain. Will she let Aiden near a pool again? "If my son wants to get back in the water, I'm not going to take that from him."

And will she use the same babysitter again? "I will not. My family will help me take care of him."

A fund has been established at ORNL Federal Credit Union to help with Aiden's mounting medical bills.

I am praying for that little boy and his mother. The babysitter needs to be the one to get punished if anyone not his mom. Im sure if he was with his mom it wouldnt have happened. but the babysitter should be in trouble. His mom trusted her to watch the baby. She shouldnt be judged. people always look for the worst in other people. The only time anyone should be charged in accidents and deaths not being present is a social worker with cps. Then CPS social workers should be criminally responsible should a child be abused or killed in foster care. A mother who leaves her child with a baby sitter shouldnt be punished. Put the shoe on the other foot. Someone you know and trust betrays you. Should you be punished? Children are fast have to watch them. Door should have been locked. Gate should be locked.Help those that need help if you dont wish to help dont. but dont critisize those that do help and those that are getting the help. 100% of you moms dogging this mother would be right where she is if it were you, Anbd dont say it will never happen. Because it can. everything till it happens to us always happens to someone else. Till it happens to you. A car can hit you and your child while crossing the street. Your child can decide to climb the counters in a second your doing the dishes. They can decide to jump up and down on the bed falling and hurting themselves. SO stop the judging people.

Who are either of you to say he has medicaid or her family has money? Who are either of you to judge? You must know her to state these things and everyone is entitled to their opinion but i believe right now bashing of the mother is a little uncalled for when the little boy needs everyones prayers right now. Sad that when a Child of all people needs prayers all you all can do is down the mother and babysitter! Shame on you! May God have mercy on yours souls! Praying for you baby Aiden.

granted, the babysitter really is liable, especially since it has happened TWICE now. I mean, you would think. But you are right: no one should be judging Ashley. I know her a very little by being a part of a Prayer Event...and she is not the money sucking monster that some of you haters (not you notjudging and a few others of course) are making her out to be. That woman loves her little boy with everything she is, and it makes me livid to see the comments that some of these people (who are just stumbling upon this story) are making!!!

that's exactly right....sometimes things aren't as they appear once you get the FACTS.

You know I thought the same thoughts you all have until I took the time to find out for myself the truth of what happened to this child. Ashley is a single mother working full time to support herself and this child. This little boy is Ashley's LIFE! She had to leave her job and has been right there with him for 2 weeks, I know she needs money to help with bills since she's not been able to work. It's so easy to sit back and cast stones without FACTS. No one knew this man that was called to the house was an unregistered sex offender. This case is still being investigated but Ashley is an excellent Mother that mistakenly trusted her babysitter. I believe in her 100%. Still praying everyday fpr Ashley and Aiden..

What Idiot would leave their son with this crazy women? As a Mom, I sense when my kids are around things that aren't good for them. Between the sitter not watching him AND the nonregistered sex offender that's enough to have an odd feeling about whose caring for your babies. Or at least one would think so anyway. Prayers to Aiden!

Don't give to Aiden's mother to make her rich off of her toddler son's back. Medicaid is picking up 100% of the medical bills so she's looking to get paid from her 5 minutes of fame. Twice almost drowning? The nerve to try to pocket money for a fund from the public when she needs to be put in jail. Criminal charges should be coming both to the neglectful mother & the babysitter who she allowed twice to almost drown her baby. Ignorance is not a defense. Grow up!

you are absolutely right and this mother is supposedly a nurse and her family is not hurting for money and this fund set up at ORNL is just wrong when Medicaid is paying for the medical bills, and you are right she is hoping to get a win fall from this near tragedy, Shame on her! And she should be jailed for neglect.

How do either of you know if she has money or her son has medicaid? Who are either of you to judge? Its a said tragedy and instead of bashing the mother we should be praying for the little boy! He obviously needs alot of prayers and worry about who needs to be jailed or whatever isnt necessary right now. You dont want to donate to help the child, then dont. By the way you seem you wouldnt help anyone let alone a child. May God have mercy on your souls!

no, shame on you! how can you judge someone you don't even know??? If that were your little boy, you would spend every moment next to his bedside as he fought for his which point, you wouldn't be working either and how then would YOU pay for your bills??? And like notjudging said: how do you know if she has money or medicaid? Assume=making an A** out of U and ME.

Aiden's mother should be jailed along with the negligent babysitter for justice for the toddler. Once is enough right? Now Aiden's mother is panhandling when applying for Medicaid the state pays 100% of the medical bills so she hopes to get a win fall from this near tragedy. Shame on her!

first off,the mother does work very hard for her son.she could lay up like some do and draw welfare but she don't.if you don't want to contribute to a fund that solely will be used for the extensive care of this baby-keep your prayer is that you don't ever have to go through such a horrible experience.GOD have mercy on these people who are bashing a single mom who loves her son more than anyone knows.GOD reveal to their hearts that they lack the compassion they should have.

I seriously doubt a mother with a good job would have medicaid, you obviously don't have a clue. Let's do something constructive and pray that this baby makes it! Jailed for putting her trust in someone that failed?? We would all be in jail if that was the case. Your pretty vindictive to not know Ashley.
