Cystic Fibrosis Makes Great Strides, raising $100k

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- The cloudy skies and cooler weather this morning were perfect for outdoor exercise including the Great Strides walk and 5k Pajama Fun Run at Victor Ashe Park.

About 350 people participated, making up about 40 teams.

Together they raised $100,000 for CFF.

90 cents from every dollar goes directly to research.

CF is a genetic disease and affects a person's digestive system and their lungs.

Life expectancy is 37 years.

A new drug that should be available in 2013 is the closest CF patients will have to a cure, adding years to their lives.

Today at the event, the largest team, "Big Al's Buddies," had about 70 members walking in honor of 23 year old Alex Williams who passed away recently to Cystic Fibrosis.

The largest fund raising team was Kayla's Krusaders bringing in $66,000 for CF.

There was also a silent auction, music and activities.

Check out the photos from the event on our WVLT facebook page!

The next big event for CF is Wine on the Water October 19, 2012.

For the month of May, Papa Murphy's is giving $1 to CF from their $3 Mini Murph pizza kits.

Also, The Cup has a lemon creme cupcake specifically designed for CF and donating to the cause with every one of these purchased this month!
