Deaths from painkiller overdose triple in decade

CDC report

NEW YORK (AP) -- A new government report shows the number of overdose deaths from powerful painkillers have more than tripled over a decade.

Prescription painkillers such as OxyContin, Vicodin and methadone contributed to the deaths of nearly 15,000 people in 2008. That's more than three times the 4,000 deaths in 1999.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 5 percent of Americans ages 12 and older say they've abused prescription painkillers. The highest rate of abuse was reported in Oklahoma while the lowest was in Nebraska and Iowa.

Fatal overdoses were more likely in men and middle-aged adults.

The report was released Tuesday by the CDC.

Is that it?? There are scores of young citizens dying every day from crooked MS's and this is all you can publish? Why isn't there any laws enacted that state an MD cannot prescribe more than 3 low dose oxycodone pills for a new patient, and then see them again in three days, making sure the pt. brings an mri or previous doctor's examination, stating history and exact injury. WHY ARE THESE MD'S GETTING AWAY WITH THIS?? My son's friend died last week; he was in rehab for a pill problem, went to rehab for 2 months. After a week of being clean, he went to a Dr. that had not seen him for over 2 years. HE PRESCRIBED 180 30 MGS. OF OXYCODONE 8 X DAILY!!!! THE DAY AFTER HOS DR.'S VISIT HEH DIED OF AN OVERDOSE. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO THESE DOCTORS?
