KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- It's January and plenty of people are making their New Years resolution to lose weight and get healthy. But can you still be healthy and have a few extra pounds?
Dr. Thomas Namey of UT Medical Center explains "Even if you're overweight you can still be in shape. A lot of people don't realize that but the health benefits that happen from regular activity even if you're overweight are substantial."
Dr. Namey also explains that when it comes to your health; there's many factors to include not just the number you see on the scale.
"You have to calculate your BMI or body mass index. You use your height, weight, age and amount of exercise a week to figure it out. Once we have that number we can evaluate your leanness or amount of muscle compared to fat." said Dr. Namey
Even if you feel like you're in the normal weight category you still could be considered unhealthy especially if you don't exercise regularly. Dr. Namey's advice is to always exercise and if you don't see the weight coming off; don't get discouraged because you're probably building muscle and that's harder to see when you look in the mirror.
