Mobile Meals celebrates 40 years

Updated: Tue 5:46 PM, Nov 01, 2011

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- For the past 40 years, Mobile Meals has been feeding seniors in our area. The program started out with only 20 meals for seniors on November 1, 1971 and now they deliver 850 meals. Even though things have changed over the year; much has stayed the same.

We met 95 year old Thelma Love who gets a meal, smile and a familiar face at her door every day.

"All the volunteers are friends to me. I consider them my Mobile Meals family." Love said.

But these meals are more than just a hot meal; it's a way for her to stay in her home and live independently.

"Ive been here in this house since 1957. My daughter keep trying to pull me to her house and I keep pulling to stay at my house. I'm planning on staying as long as I can take care of myself."

Volunteers are the ones that have made Mobile Meals happen over the past 40 years. Volunteers like Mark Enloe who has made it a family tradition to help the seniors.

"It's all about giving back to the community. This program benefits a number of people and I'm glad to be just a very small part of it." Mark said.
