ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is getting a $6 million gift from the nation's largest nonprofit dialysis provider for the creation of a new kidney research institute.

The university made the announcement Tuesday.

The gift comes from Tennessee-based Dialysis Clinic Inc. The gift represents one of the largest private donations in the history of the Health Sciences Center.

Officials say the institute will focus on research related to the function of the kidney and diseases that affect the organ. The goal is to improve care for those who are diagnosed with kidney disease.

DCI operates more than 200 clinics in 27 states and serves about 14,000 patients. The nonprofit operates 11 dialysis clinics in New Mexico.
