Second Harvest expanding community reach

ALCOA, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Soon over 1.4 million pounds of fresh and frozen foods will have a place to be stored and distributed to the community thanks to a new cooler/freezer being installed by Second Harvest of East Tennessee.

Second Harvest is holding the groundbreaking today at 1:30 p.m. at their Alcoa location on Harvest Lane.

The organization's executive director said in a release, "This new cooler/freezer will allow us to provide over a million nutritious meals to the hungry in East Tennessee each year."

Second Harvest moved into the Alcoa location last September, after their location on Delaware Avenue became too small, and flooding caused expensive food and property damage.

When the organization moved into the organization, they needed $1.5 million dollars to install the cooler/freezer but had $750,000 in pledges.
