Running growing to be the most popular form of exercise

(WVLT) -- Running is one of the most widely practiced forms of exercise in the world. It's becoming more popular because of its acceisibility. All you need is a pair of shoes proper clothing and a path.

It's also becoming popular because of the results, like losing weight, getting fit, and mental benefits of blowing off stress.

Although the concept is simple, there is more to learning to run than just putting one foot in front of the other and propelling your body forward. There are simple steps that can get you from the couch to the road successfully. Local 8 News talked to David Wiley, the editor-in-chief of Runner's World Magazine for tips on getting started and how to push forward with your running agenda.

Wiley says it's important to do it right from the beginning. "It's really imporant to build a base, and start slowly. You want to set a goal of 20 minutes of continuous exercise when you're just starting out and it's fine if you can't run for 20 straight minutes. Start running and if you need to work in walk breaks that's fine and once you get into 20 minutes of continuous running then you can build from there, work up to 30-40 minutes."

If you need more encouragement, don't do it alone. Wiley suggests, "Try to find a running partner -- someone to be out there with and it makes it a lot more fun, knowing that someone is out there counting on you on those cold dark mornngs when you may just want to roll over and pull the covers over your head as a big motivator."

To improve longevity on the ground, it's imporant to have the right shoes for your feet. Wiley recommends going to a running specialty store and know your characteristics. What kind of strides do you take? Do you have high or low arches? These are questions you'll need the answers to in finding the right shoe. Many specialty stores can typically figure out the answers for you.

When running in cold weather, be prepared with more than a cotton t-shirt. Wiley says, "It's great to have some high tech synthetic fibers to run in, as opposed to the old cotton t-shirt which will, when you sweat, stay wet, and keep you cold."
