BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (AP) -- An executive with UnitedHealthcare of Tennessee says an early step for preventing Type 2 diabetes is creating a support system and beginning a healthy lifestyle with friends and family.
Dr. Janice Huckaby, medical director for the health insurance company, says working together encourages good dietary habits.
She also suggests removing less healthy foods from kitchens to eliminate temptation, beginning an active lifestyle such as walking and downloading the OptumizeMe app on smartphones.
The best approach, she summarizes, is combining healthy eating with regular physical activity.
Type 2 diabetes, the most common kind, was formerly called adult-onset diabetes.
