Tech Tuesday: Fitness apps

(CBS/Cnet.com) -- There are a lot of helpful smartphone apps out there -- apps for texting while driving, getting a date, and even apps for making your own ringtones, but no one told you how to look good doing it.

Sharon Vaknin from Cnet.com has some free apps to help you get into shape.

Three free apps for Androids and iPhones to help you get in shape:

First up is RunKeeper. It's a free app for Android and iPhone that lets you track your outdoor activities like running, hiking, and biking. So if you're out on a hike, "start" the activity, and RunKeeper will give you your pace, calorie count, and it'll use your phone's GPS to track the route in Google Maps. When you're done, you can show off your success by posting to Facebook. All your activities are saved onto the app and the RunKeeper website where you can view larger maps, check out your friends' activity, and monitor your progress.

Exercise is very important for your health, but don't forget about your diet. If you're trying to lose weight or maintain it, you need to be burning more calories than you're consuming, and "My Fitness Pal" for iPhone and Android helps you do just that. It's an app that gives you a daily calorie goal based on your current weight, height, sex, age, and goal weight. It also asks you how many pounds you want to lose per week. Then you add what you've eaten, and what exercises you've done that day, and the app will adjust to let you know how much more you can eat that day.

It's easy to get a gym membership, but if you're not fitness-savvy, you could wind up on the tredmill and elliptical every day. You need a variety of strength and cardio to burn the most fat and keep your workouts from getting boring. Fitness Pro for iPhone gives you a huge selection of strength training workouts using machines, bar bells, or just the mat. Each exercise has photos and a description to make sure your form is on point. You can pick exercises based on the muscle you want to tone, or choose from one of the preloaded routines. Go to the anatomy tab and get a few lessons in the human body. Then, when you click on a muscle group, you'll get a list of exercises to work that area. When you complete you exercises, hit the pencil button and log your sets for that day so that later on you can see how you've improved over time. Fitness Pro also lets you map your runs, but it has fewer features than RunKeeper.
