KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) --- America is getting bigger, or at least our jeans are.
Right now 66% of the country's adults are overweight or obese. Shocked? Look 20 years into the future. A study found in the journal Obesity predicts that by 2030 86% of the U.S. will be overweight or obese. 15 years after that, every adult in the country will have a weight problem.
Dr. Thomas Namey, a local expert on obesity, has studied the problem. "The intersection of too much food and too little activity has led to the explosion of obesity and all trends indicatie that its going to get worse," Dr. Namey says.
It's the growing problem of growing stomachs that has enormous health consequences.
"Athlerscorosis, hypertension, bad cholesterol, hormonal problems," says Dr. Namey.
Those health problems could come with financial strains. In the same study, research predicts health care costs could inflate by a possible 956 billion dollars each year.
