What's your kidney score? Free screenings in Knoxville

Posted: Thu 11:39 AM, Mar 29, 2012

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- More than 75 people got a free kidney screening Thursday when the National Kidney Foundation set up a clinic at the O'Connor Senior Center.

The KEEP screening, which involves a blood and urine analysis, can cost up to $1,000 without insurance coverage at the doctor's office. It takes about an hour and half to work through the seven steps, but you leave with vital information about your health.

"Many people don't even realize the function of their kidneys until they fail unfortunately," said Michelle Dicken, the East Tennessee community relations manager for the National Kidney Foundation. "So it's very important, especially if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of those diseases that you keep a check on your kidneys."

There are still a few openings for walk-ins before 1 p.m. Thursday. You can stop by the center at 611 Winona Street. If you can't make it Thursday, you can call Dicken at (865)221-2121 to sign up for a future screening. There are no current dates set.
