SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- A search is under way in the eastern Caribbean for a power boat with up to seven people on board missing amid heavy swells caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Maritime officials in the region say the boat was a rigid-hulled inflatable boat that was traveling from the island of Dominica to Martinique. The boat departed Sunday before noon and a Dominican Coast Guard official says the journey should take no more than two hours.
Coast Guard Commander Mervyn Pendenque says there is a light wind and heavy swells from the storm but not enough to affect normal sailing. Pendenque said Dominican authorities were searching the island's harbors Monday to see if the vessel is anchored to await better conditions.
Authorities from French Martinique are conducting an aerial search.
