Bush Plans to Veto Children's Health Program Expansion Bill

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush plans to make good on his threat to veto a major expansion of a children's health program.

That's what he told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a morning phone call she describes as a "friendly conversation."

Pelosi says there "are 10 million reasons" for Bush to sign the bill, citing the number of children the proposed expansion would cover.

White House press secretary Dana Perino says Bush has been clear for months that if the bill came to him in its current form, he would veto it. She adds that, after he vetoes it, Bush says he would be willing to sit down and try to find a compromise.

Congress overwhelmingly approved the 35-billion-dollar increase in the State Children's Health Insurance Program. It's likely to land on Bush's desk next week.
