GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- An attorney for a former Duke lacrosse player who was falsely accused of rape says the filing of a lawsuit is "not about money."
Richard Emery says the federal suit is about "sending a message" to public officials who only pay attention when money is involved. The suit seeks unspecified punitive and compensatory damages and attorneys fees, and also seeks to reform the way Durham police handle criminal investigations.
All three wrongly accused students are involved in the federal lawsuit. Defendants include disgraced prosecutor Mike Nifong, the city of Durham, North Carolina, and the police detectives on the case.
A Durham spokeswoman says the city will defend claims against its employees, but not the claims against Nifong.
