ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Police in New Mexico say a woman fell from the basket of a hot air balloon when it tipped while the pilot was trying to free the craft from a fiberoptic line.
Police say the balloon got stuck on the fiberoptic line running above a power line. The pilot threw down a tether to a pickup truck on the ground to reel the balloon down and free it.
However, the tether broke, and the balloon flew back up, causing the basket to tip and the woman to fall out. Attempts to revive the woman were unsuccessful.
The balloon flew across a road and crash landed.
The unidentified woman and the pilot are believed to have been the only people aboard.
The accident site is about three miles from the launch site for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
