112 homes damaged or destroyed by Colo. wildfire

RED FEATHER LAKES, Colo. (AP) -- At least 112 homes have been damaged or destroyed by an 84-square-mile wildfire in northern Colorado.

Officials say the total is likely to rise.

Fire commanders say the fire is 20 percent contained and full containment could be two to four weeks away.

One person was killed when a cabin burned. Evacuation calls have been made to about 3,000 phones since the fire started, but authorities cannot say how many homes are involved. Evacuation orders have been lifted for about 1,200 of those numbers.

Evacuations have also been ordered at a 17-square-mile fire near Pagosa Springs in southwest Colorado. A fire information officer says about 10 people at two ranches were told to leave.

As efforts to contain fires burning in New Mexico, a team of biologists is trying to save a threatened species of trout. Once the fires are out, experts fear summer rains will choke waterways with ash, soil and charred debris. The biologists are using electroshocking devices to temporarily stun the Gila trout. The fish are being scooped up and taken to a hatchery in northern New Mexico for safe keeping.
