(WVLT/CBS) -- Vice President Dick Cheney will return to the hospital later today for more testing in connection with an irregular heartbeat.
A represenative at the vice president's office says doctors found the problem during an examination earlier this morning after Cheney went in because of a lingering cough due to a cold.
Cheney's spokeswoman Megan Mitchell says Cheney, who has a history of heart problems, was found to have an irregular heartbeat, which on further testing was determined to be "an abnormal rhythm involving the upper chambers of the heart."
Mitchell says Cheney will visit George Washington University Hospital for further evaluation and, if indicated, cardioversion, delivery of an electric impulse to the heart, which is a standard treatment for atrial fibrillation.
This will be an outpatient procedure, and the Vice President is expected to return home Monday night.
Earlier this year, Cheney was hospitalized after doctors found a blood clot in his leg.
He's had four heart attacks, quadruple bypass surgery, two artery-clearing angioplasties, an operation to implant a defibrillator six years ago.
