Two-year-old dies in Chicago day-care fire

CHICAGO (AP) -- A fire at a Chicago home doubling as a day-care center has claimed the life of a two-year-old boy.

Authorities say the toddler went into a closet apparently trying to hide from the flames.

Five other children and a woman escaped. A neighbor and the day-care operator tried to go back in to find the missing child but were stopped by the heat and smoke.

The fire started in the basement. Firefighters found the child beneath some clothing in a first-floor closet.

A department spokesman says it's a common reaction among small children scared by fires to try to hide.
