WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- An Austrian tourist is dead after diving into waters that had been baited with bloody fish parts to attract sharks.
The 49-year-old Vienna lawyer jumped into the waters without a cage or other protection and was bitten on the leg by a shark. He was airlifted to a hospital where he died.
The dive took place 50 miles off the coast of Fort Lauderdale.
The scuba diving company's Web site says it offers opportunities to meet "face to face" with sharks and warns there will be "chumming." That's the term for placing fish parts in the water to get the sharks to approach.
The Miami Dade Police Department is looking into the incident.
