DENVER (AP) -- A jury has convicted a Denver man of murder and fatal child abuse in the starvation death of a 7-year-old boy in his care.
Jon Phillips was accused of withholding food from Chandler Grafner and keeping the boy in a closet for the last few weeks of his life. The coroner said he died of starvation and dehydration.
Tuesday's verdict followed a two-week trial and just 3 1/2 hours of deliberation. The 27-year-old Phillips was also convicted of evidence tampering.
The defense had argued that Chandler died of acute diabetes that went undetected.
Phillips' 23-year-old girlfriend pleaded guilty on Monday to second-degree murder in Chandler's death. Sarah Berry entered the plea just as jurors began deliberating charges against Phillips.
