NEW YORK (AP) -- The Dow fell 344 points Thursday to 11,188 as investors sent stocks sharply lower amid signs that the economic slowdown is showing no sign of improvement.
The caution also comes ahead of tomorrow's monthly employment report.
The S&P 500 dropped 38 points to 1,236.
The Nasdaq composite was down 74 points to 2,259.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 5-1 margin.
NYSE volume came to 5 billion shares. Nasdaq stock market volume was 2.3 billion shares.
Oil prices closed at their lowest level in five months, down $1.46 to $107.89 a barrel in New York.
