16 hurt in Conn. fire at apartments for elderly

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) -- Officials in Waterbury, Conn., say 16 people have been injured in an early morning fire at an apartment building for the elderly.

The two-alarm fire was reported shortly before 4 a.m. Thursday. Fire officials say the blaze started in a first-floor apartment and sent smoke throughout the four-story building.

Authorities evacuated the building, and firefighters rescued several people through their windows.

Officials say two of the injured have been taken to a burn treatment center.
