Pakistan orders troops to open fire if US raids

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) -- The Pentagon says Islamabad will "correct the record" on a statement ordering the Pakistani military to open fire if U.S. troops launch another air or ground raid across the Afghan border.

Spokesman Bryan Whitman says Pakistan is an ally in the global war on terror, adding that the U.S. enjoys "good cooperation with Pakistan along the border."

The Pakistani orders came in response to a highly unusual ground attack earlier this month by U.S. commandos. And while the ground attack was rare, there have been repeated reports of U.S. drone aircraft striking militant targets, most recently last week.

Pakistani officials warn that stepped-up cross-border raids will only fuel violent religious extremism in Pakistan.
