GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- A Greensboro man has been sentenced to at least 13 years in prison as part of a plea deal for fatally choking his 27-year-old ex-girlfriend.
The News & Record of Greensboro reported Tuesday that 29-year-old DeCarlo Rayshaun Bennett was sentenced on a second-degree murder charge. He telling authorities he had buried Sherri Jackson in a makeshift grave in the backyard of his mother's home.
Bennett had been charged with first-degree murder with the possibility of life in prison. A plea deal was struck June 26.
Authorities said Jackson disappeared less than a week after Bennett spent Thanksgiving dinner in 2006 discussing faith and the importance of respecting women with the victim's father, MacArthur Jackson.
