CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) -- Marines from Camp Lejeune will be assigned to a larger unit that will go to Afghanistan instead of Iraq when it deploys this fall.
The Jacksonville Daily News reported that the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment was scheduled for duty in Iraq when it leaves in November.
The battalion of infantry troops will be assigned to an air and ground task force that is replacing a Lejeune-based Marine Expeditionary Unit and a battalion based in California.
Marine spokesman Maj. David Nevers said the air-ground task force is being created from units around the Marine Corps especially to replace the two units that will be leaving Afghanistan.
Nevers said the unit also was created to reinforce troop levels in Afghanistan.
