LACKAWANNA, N.Y. (AP) -- The lone American killed in yesterday's attack on the U.S. Embassy in Yemen was an 18-year-old high school senior who had gone overseas for an arranged marriage.
Susan Elbaneh (el-BAHN'-uh) had gone abroad last month to marry a Yemeni man, who was also killed in the attack. The couple was planning to return to live in New York and was at the embassy to fill out paperwork for her husband's move.
Grieving relatives and friends have gathered at the family's home in Lackawanna, New York, near Buffalo. Elbaneh was born in the U.S. and raised in the town.
She was related to an alleged member of a group of Yemeni-American men who traveled to an al-Qaida training camp in 2001. But relatives stress neither she nor they have had any contact with the man, who is in Yemeni custody after being convicted of planning attacks on oil installations.
