Ky. gov. calls on president for disaster relief

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Gov. Steve Beshear is calling on President Bush to open the way for federal disaster relief to help pay for damages caused by hurricane-force winds that battered Kentucky on Sunday.

Beshear asked Bush to issue a presidential disaster declaration, which is required before the federal government can reimburse state and local governments for cleaning up and repairing infrastructure.

Beshear announced that he had requested the disaster declaration at a press conference Friday in Louisville.

Winds up to 75 mph knocked out electricity to more than 500,000 Kentuckians. About 100,000 remained without power Friday morning.
