WILSON, N.C. (AP) -- A former state Supreme Court Justice known as "the smiling cobra" has died on his birthday.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Friday that Justice John Webb died on his 82nd birthday Thursday in his hometown of Wilson. Webb was a judge on the state Court of Appeals for nine years and a Superior Court justice for six years.
Webb was fighting Parkinson's disease. He had been receiving care at Britthaven of Wilson for about a year and half before he died.
Webb graduated from the University of North Carolina and received his law degree from Columbia Law School. He formed a law practice in Wilson, and later became a judge.
Webb is survived by his daughter, son, and three grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday at First Baptist Church of Wilson.
