NC Republicans, 3 Democrats help defeat bailout

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Nine of North Carolina's 13-member congressional delegation have voted against a $700 billion emergency package for the country's financial sector.

All six North Carolina Republican House members were joined by Democratic Reps. Heath Shuler, G.K. Butterfield and Mike McIntyre in the no vote. The bailout package backed by President Bush sunk on a 228-205 vote in the U.S. House.

Concord Republican Rep. Robin Hayes said he voted against the package because it didn't include a provision preventing foreign banks and investment firms from receiving taxpayer money.

Rep. Virginia Foxx from Banner Elk said she couldn't support the plan because it would burden taxpayers for years and did not adequately address the causes of the financial market crisis.
