Female Ark. prison guard killed checking on inmate

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Prison officials say a female guard at the East Arkansas Unit near Brickeys has been stabbed to death by an inmate.

Correction Department spokeswoman Shea Wilson says the guard was checking a report that inmate Latavious Johnson had an unauthorized pair of shoes in the barracks when she was attacked Friday afternoon.

Wilson said 47-year-old Barbara Ester was stabbed in the side, abdomen and chest with a shank and died at a hospital in Memphis, Tenn..

Wilson said the 30-year-old inmate was being moved to a maximum-security prison at Varner. State Police and the prison's internal affairs staff are investigating and it would be up to prosecutors whether to file charges against the inmate.

Johnson is serving time for first-degree murder after the death of his father.
