Jailer: Inmate's needle part of escape plot

WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) -- An eastern Kentucky jailer says an inmate charged with murder planned to use a hypodermic needle and a sharpened pencil as weapons in a plot to escape from jail.

Letcher County Deputy Jailer Jeff Mullins said during a hearing last week that a tip led to a needle and pencil in a cell 33-year-old James Ray Maggard shared with 14 other inmates. The Mountain Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/TBEPRr ) that jailers found the items taped under Maggard's bunk during the Nov. 30 search.

Maggard is charged with killing his lover's husband in June. He faces additional charges of promoting contraband.

Stephanie Fleming, who is charged with complicity to commit murder, also faces an added charge of promoting contraband. A third person is also charged with
