Md. Lottery: Don't throw that winning ticket away

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland Lottery officials want to dispel rumors that the state's Mega Millions jackpot has already been claimed and urged the winner to keep that ticket safe.

At a news conference Thursday, Lottery Director Stephen Martino didn't address reports of a Baltimore woman who has said she won. He stressed that officials haven't heard from anyone claiming to have the winning ticket.

Martino says there's been no shortage of rumors since the drawing came two days before April Fools' Day. He says it would unfortunate if someone mistakenly thought the record jackpot had been claimed and threw out a ticket worth $218 million.

He encouraged people to check their tickets, especially if they were purchased at the 7-Eleven in Milford Mill.

The winner has until Sept. 28 to claim the jackpot.
