CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- New Hampshire lawmakers are expected to decide whether to take the first step toward making their state the first to repeal a gay marriage law through legislation -- a move opposed by the governor.
A vote is scheduled Wednesday in the Republican-controlled House on a bill that would rescind the 2-year-old law and restore a law that allowed civil unions in 2008 and 2009. The measure would then go to the Senate, but Democratic Gov. John Lynch has promised to veto the bill if it reaches his desk.
A two-thirds vote would be needed to override a veto of the repeal, which would take effect in March 2013.
The legislation also calls for voters to weigh in on the issue through a nonbinding ballot question in November.
