NEW YORK (AP) The manager of the J.C. Penney's store in Manhattan says he's encouraged by the traffic and sales he's been seeing. And a company spokesman says the chain is seeing similar crowds at other locations across the country.
A year ago, Penney didn't open until 6 a.m. on the day after Thanksgiving. This year, most Penney stores joined other big retail chains in opening Thursday evening.
But the big crowds are scaring off some Black Friday shoppers. A Georgia couple had picked out some gifts at the Bass Pro Shop in Savannah, but then saw what looked like at least 100 people waiting for cashiers. Tony Abruzzio says he just put everything back where he got it. He says, "We didn't want to stand in line all day."
