Fred Thompson to Mitt Romney: 'You can't buy South Carolina'

FORT MILL, S.C. (AP) -- Republican Fred Thompson mocked rival Mitt Romney for spending millions of his own money on the presidential race.

Thompson told about 200 people at a restaurant in Fort Mill, South Carolina, that South Carolina is not for sale.

Romney, a former venture capitalist and one-time Massachusetts governor, has dipped into his personal wealth for more than $17 million. He's spent about $2 million on advertising in South Carolina.

Thompson focused on Romney's spending as he launched television ads in Iowa and on national cable TV that will cost several hundred thousand dollars.

Thompson is an actor and former U.S. senator from Tennessee.
