Rep. Davis blames Democrats for loss in GOP primary

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- U.S. Rep. David Davis says he thinks Democratic voters contributed to his Republican 1st District primary loss to Johnson City Mayor Phil Roe.

With all precincts reporting, Roe had 50 percent of the vote to Davis' 49 percent with a 500-vote margin.

Davis told the Kingsport Times-News he believes he was the winner among voters who identify as Republicans. Tennessee has an open primary system.

A spokesman for Davis told The Associated Press that the congressman would make no public comment Friday beyond a statement thanking supporters and saying he wanted to make sure "every single vote that was cast is counted."

Tennessee law authorizes a recount if there's an indication of fraud affecting enough votes to change the result of the election. Davis did not say if he will seek a recount or if he believes there was voter fraud.
