WASHINGTON (AP) -- Virginia's Tim Kaine and Indiana's Evan Bayh have been told they're out as possible Democratic running mates, leaving Delaware Senator Joe Biden a leading contender.
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine spread the word Friday he's been ruled out, and party officials say Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana has been told he's not Obama's choice.
Biden associates say they believe, but do not know, he will be tapped.
Additionally, several associates of Obama, including some at his campaign headquarters in Chicago, say they believe Biden is the choice, though they caution they haven't been told directly.
Compounding the mystery, conservative Representative Chet Edwards of Texas emerged, however briefly, as a contender.
Former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's chances remain uncertain, although several aides say they do not believe she's in contention.
Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius rounds out the roster of likely contenders.
