ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The McCain campaign says vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's unmarried daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant.
Aides say the announcement was made to refute Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April with Down syndrome, was actually her 17-year-old daughter's baby.
A campaign statement says Bristol Palin will keep her baby, due in late December, and marry the child's father.
Sarah and Todd Palin say they are "proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents."
A McCain spokesman says the Republican candidate sees it as a "private family matter." He adds, "Life happens."
Barack Obama, meanwhile, says the families of candidates are "off limits." He particularly condemns rumors involving the children of candidates.
