WASHINGTON (AP) -- John McCain's record on issues surrounding teen pregnancy and contraception is getting a renewed look, now that his running mate has disclosed that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.
McCain's position on contraceptives and teen pregnancy issues has been difficult to judge on the campaign trail, as he has appeared uncomfortable discussing such topics. But during more than two decades in the Senate, McCain has opposed proposals to spend federal money on teen-pregnancy prevention programs. And he's voted to require poor teen mothers to stay in school or lose their benefits.
McCain's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (PAY'-lin), has said she opposes funding what she calls "explicit sex-ed" programs in her state.
Palin announced yesterday that her daughter Bristol is expecting a baby in late December. The revelation was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son was actually her daughter's baby. Palin says her daughter intends to raise her child and marry the baby's father.
