Report: Palin tapped travel allowance at home

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Alaska Governor Sarah Palin reportedly charged her state a daily allowance -- normally used for official travel -- for more than 300 nights she stayed at home.

A Washington Post analysis of the governor's travel statements also shows Palin billed taxpayers more than $40,000 for travel by her husband and children between the Palin home and offices.

Now the Republican vice presidential candidate, Palin's spending and record in office are coming under intense scrutiny.

Per-diem payments are meant for meals and other expenses while on state business. State officials told The Post the claims were allowed because Palin's "duty station" is in Juneau and she lives about 600 miles away in Wasilla. The governor moved to Juneau last year but often stays in Wasilla and works 45 miles away, in a state office in Anchorage.

Alaska's state finance director says the government covers travel costs of anyone conducting state business, adding, "I can't imagine kids could be doing that."
