In interview, Palin defends Alaska-Russia remark

NEW YORK (AP) -- Sarah Palin is defending her remark that the close proximity of Russia and Alaska gives her foreign policy experience.

The Alaska governor tells CBS News in an interview airing tonight that Russia and her state "have trade missions back and forth."

Palin has never visited Russia and never traveled outside North America until last year. She also never met a foreign leader until her trip to New York this week. In the CBS interview, she didn't offer any examples of being involved in negotations with the Russians.

Palin's comments about Russia have been slammed by her critics and turned into a punch line for a "Saturday Night Live" skit earlier this month.
