UNDATED (AP) -- Democrats are celebrating at the state level and Republicans say they're lucky to be holding onto four incumbent governorships.
A national Democratic onslaught yesterday included the re-election of Washington state's Gov. Chris Gregoire (GREG'-wahr) and wins in two open gubernatorial contests.
The first woman governor of North Carolina is a Democrat.
In Washington state, Gregoire beat Republican Dino Rossi in a rematch of their historically close 2004 election.
The Democrats' biggest prize came in Missouri, where Attorney General Jay Nixon easily beat Republican Congressman Kenny Hulshof. The seat opened when Republican Gov. Matt Blunt declined to seek re-election.
Four incumbent Republican governors were easily re-elected.
In all, Democrats won 7 of 11 contested governorships.
