Plan for US diplomats in Iran shelved: Rice

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says a decision on whether to send U.S. diplomats to Iran for the first time in three decades will be left to President-elect Barack Obama's administration.

Rice says plans to set up a diplomatic outpost in Iran remain viable but that it is too late for President Bush's foreign policy team to move ahead with the plan that was first floated this summer. She said Wednesday that the administration had hoped to go ahead with it but that a number of international events made it impractical to do so.

The Associated Press reported in early October that the administration had shelved the idea and would leave it for its successor in part due to the impact it might have had on the U.S. presidential election.
