Bredesen Has Huge Lead, Gay Marriage Ban Gaining

Nashville (AP) -- A Middle Tennessee State University poll that shows Senate Candidates Bob Corker and Harold Ford Junior in a dead heat also sampled other issues.

The survey of 549 people reached by telephone also shows Governor Bredesen holds a 59 percent to 21 percent lead over Republican Challenger Jim Bryson. In that race, however, a fifth of likely voters are undecided.

The survey shows an apparent increase in support for a Constitutional ban on gay marriage with 74 percent of respondents saying it should be against the law. Twenty-one percent disagreed.

The university's spring poll showed 69 percent of respondents favored the ban, a number virtually unchanged from the 2005 spring and fall polls.
