Former Governor, Health Secretary Says He's Running For President

Washington (AP) -- Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson is joining the Republican presidential race.

Appearing on ABC's "This Week," Thompson called himself "the reliable conservative."

Thompson also served as Health and Human Services Secretary during President Bush's first term, and claims to be the only GOP candidate who has helped assemble both a state and federal budget.

He says his Iraq strategy would be "tremendously" different from the President's, but also says he opposes the Democratic approach in congress to start withdrawing US troops based on timelines.

Thompson has acknowledged being a "dark horse candidate," for the GOP nomination. He announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee last year, but his poll numbers have registered in the single digits. Thompson says he's been an "underdog" before and doesn't mind.
