Numerous Signs Point To Fred Thompson Run For GOP Presidential Nomination

Washington (AP) -- Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson may not be a candidate, but there are signs he might become one.

Thompson is hiring staff, speaking to conservative groups, writing online columns on topics of the day and staking out positions on issues like the Senate immigration overhaul. He also is testing his pitch on the internet.

In 2002, Thompson said the example of George Washington serving eight years and riding out of town on a horse had great appeal. The statement came as Thompson’s US Senate term was winding down.

Conservatives who make up a big part of the Republican base have found fault with Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney for varying reasons and for months now have been searching for a candidate to embrace.

Without being a candidate, Thompson finds himself competitive with those who are.
